Microsoft announces Skype architecture changes to improve syncing and battery life

SkypeMicrosoft has announced it is augmenting the peer-to-peer architecture of Skype with the cloud to add new features and improvements to the app. Skype will evaluate the bandwidth, connectivity and firewall settings to decide how to send messages.

Currently, messages sent to an offline Skype client are queued and then downloaded when the client comes online. This can cause a delay in messages being received and can cause messages read on another device to be marked as new.

By using push notifications through the cloud, Skype will be able to keep messages synchronised among all Skype clients even when they are offline. The architectural change will also reduce the battery usage of the app and be rolled out over the coming months. Learn more on the Skype Blog here.
